IT is not about technology, it’s about people
As technology writers we all tend to get excited when we see sci-fi come to life. But my recent discussions
with the region’s IT direction setters has proved that technology in real life is not about leaving people
awestruck, but about serving the people themselves in an uncomplicated yet efficient fashion. The
healthcare sector is a perfect example of this.
There is perhaps no other segment in which technology comes this close to serving people directly.
The Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), Government of Dubai is one that took the
lead in showcasing this with its recent investment in an end-to end wireless bedside computing and client
infrastructure that now assists doctors in delivering patient care more efficiently.
Interestingly, despite the fact that technology usage was not mandated at the hospitals under it, almost
100% uptake of electronic patient service order placement and processing has been observed since June
this year and for the IT teams this can only mean total success.
But to achieve this level of interplay between technology and real-life, it could not have done without good
IT governance and a total buy-in from actual users of the technology. The IT Director of DOHMS, Sina
AbdulAziz Khoory, tackled this by ensuring that each of his key physicians was involved........
